Shelf Styling Tips

Styling a set of shelving can seem daunting at first, however when broken down into smaller sections and a few common tricks are applied, shelf styling can be fun and produce eye catching results anyone can achieve!

The aim of successfully styling shelves is to create balance and interest. Placing pieces that draw your eye to the right spots, not over crowding, and creating a story that ties in with the room.

The first point to consider is the size and shape of the shelves. Are they all equally the same size? or are there taller, shorter or wider shelves? Place your objects that fit these spaces. A tall shelf - add a tall vase, a shorter and wider shelf - place a book and a short candle or object.

There are few shelf staples that the Home Style Co team loves to use, they are as follows…

The first staple are large books to take up space.
The book spine and colour can add to the story you are aiming to create in the room.

Visually, change it up on different shelves staking vertically and horizontally. Lastly, place an object on top of a stack of a few books to be what we call a ‘topper’ or ‘finisher’ to make the vignette look complete.

The second staple are vases and floral.
These can create height or even width and bring a sense of delicacy to the shelving.
Take into account the colour, tones, and characteristics of the room and incorporate these into your shelf items.

Our third staple is adding in some greenery.
This gives the shelf a sense of freshness and life.
We love placing dangled plants on a top shelf and let them flow down.

Some extra staples are candles, objects, a gin and glasses set up or mugs for a home office.

The last tip from the Home Style Co team is keep playing and fiddling! Shelving can take time to get right, walk away and return later with fresh eyes and you’ll see what is not balanced or negatively stands out.
